The average recreational paddler will kayak at speeds between 2-4 knots. Now imagine skipping across a lake at 15 Knots! During perfect wind and wave conditions, the Hobie Tandem Island sail yaks can achieve these speeds if you so desire or with the furling sail, you can reduce your sail for a brisk and less "wet" ride. Smoky Mountain Kayaking is the only guide service in the United States offering sailing lessons using the Tandem Island. During your half-day lesson, you will master the assembly, launching, terminology, rules of the road and basic sailing of the TI while enjoying the nature and history of Tellico Lake. You and your instructor will sail together in an "no stress" learning environment that will leave you knowledgeable and confident in your new skills.
For those looking for a more customized training session or wanting to work on specific techniques, we can arrange for a private class. Working one on one with our guides in 2-hour sessions can accelerate the learning process and boost confidence quicker than in a group class. For those kayak owners who want to get the most out of their boats, bring it along.
